Happy Fall, everyone. I hope you are looking forward to a long autumn of lovely weather and great reading. We are still waiting for repairs to begin on the library building and want to thank you for the good vibes sent our way over the past seven months. We know everyone wants the library available again, and we share your feelings. One of our well-wishers, Ms. Sandra Momyer, retired Historian for Historic Yellow Springs, sent us an uplifting note and a copy of a newspaper clipping from May 5, 1829. The small blurb invited gentlemen in the Yellow Springs area to meet and discuss “preparatory measures” to establish a library 196 years ago. That seems to be where the legacy of a library in Historic Yellow Springs begins. Sandy further wrote that during the PA Soldiers' Orphan School in Historic Yellow Springs, school principal Mrs. Eleanor Moore created a library with books and magazines for the children. This made the Orphans’ school well known “for having amenities that other schools lacked.” The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts also kept a library for its students, and some of these art-related books are still housed at Historic Yellow Springs.
WOW! We are touched by nostalgia and take pride in Sandy saying that “the library has always been a part of this village,” and she hopes we get back soon. We do too. Thank you, Sandy, for letting us share your love of the library and Historic Yellow Springs with everyone.
